Faculty Development Leave
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences awards Faculty Development Leaves to full-time, tenured members of the faculty engaged in scholarly research and creative or artistic projects according to the guidelines below.
Deadline: November 5, 2024
Applications for Faculty Development Leave should be submitted electronically to Carla Sharp, Interim Associate Dean for Faculty and Research at csharp2@central.uh.edu.
CLASS Book Completion
The Book Completion Fund is intended to provide CLASS faculty assistance with the final stages of their research, including subvention for scholarly publications, data processing, etc. Selected applicants will be awarded funds based on the academic merit of their work. Projects must be within one year of completion. The maximum award under this program is $3,000. Projects are awarded based on the availability of funds. Only one application allowed per academic year. New requests must be towards a different project if applicant has received a previous Project Completion award. Awards are made at the dean’s discretion.

CLASS Book Completion Project Report
All recipients of the CLASS Book Completion Fund must complete a Project Report by August 1, 2025. Email Project Reports to CLASSGrt@uh.edu.
Research Progress Grant - Early Career
The Research Progress Grant for Early Career faculty is intended to provide assistance in furthering faculty research projects. Individuals are eligible for up to $4,000 while groups are eligible for up to $12,000 (maximum of 3 applicants). Rationale for group proposals need to be delineated clearly, the specific contributions of each individual faculty must be made clear. Faculty are not allowed to submit more than one RPG application in any given academic year. Also, if a faculty member submits an individual application, they cannot apply as an applicant on a group proposal in the same year. Faculty will be awarded funds based on the academic merit of their work. Applications are reviewed by the CLASS Research Committee who then submit recommendations for funding to the associate dean for research.

Please be advised:
- Applicants awarded the Research Progress Grant must wait one academic year before re-applying for Research Progress Grant funding. For example, if awarded for Fall 2020, one would not be eligible to re-apply until Fall 2024.
- Projects previously awarded the Project Completion Grant are not eligible for Research Progress funding.

Research Progress Grant Project Report

Research, Innovation and Scholarly Engagement (RISE) Program
The RISE Program funds projects that will strengthen the College’s viability as a contributor to the overall success of the University by supporting research and scholarly productivity. Priority will be given to projects that investigate areas of research with significant impact and potential for external funding or engage in research and scholarship of significant value to the humanities.
Faculty members who receive a RISE award are expected to generate a scholarly product or grant proposal for submission to an external sponsor. Two awards of up to $10,000 will be awarded with a grant period of one year.
Eligibility
- Full-time Tenured or Tenure-track faculty
- No more than four faculty members per application
- Collaboration with other colleges is allowed; however, a CLASS faculty member must be the lead Principal Investigator, with no more than 25% of the project budget allocated to non-CLASS team members or departments.
- Faculty who have received a previous CLASS Internal Grant that are delinquent on any reports are ineligible.
- Applicants may submit no more than one proposal.
