The Elizabeth D. Rockwell Center on Ethics and Leadership at the Hobby School of Public Affairs is collaborating with The OpEd Project to help elevate the diverse viewpoints of University of Houston faculty members beyond campus. Nearly two dozen UH participants from various disciplines will join a national network of their peers, gain access to mentors and emerge from a daylong workshop with an op-ed outline and the skills and resources to shape the critical conversations of the day. The interactive training, intended to empower academic experts to share their knowledge and research with the community, was hosted by award-winning journalist and CQ Roll Call columnist Mary Curtis. The workshop on Feb. 6, 2023, is the first part of a longer collaboration among the participants, The OpEd Project and the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Center. Participants will have ongoing access to resources, events and mentors.

Johanna Luttrell is a political philosopher specializing in race and feminist philosophy, with special concentrations in human rights, global justice, transnational feminism and social movements. Her book, published in 2019, is titled “White People and Black Lives Matter: Ignorance, Empathy, and Justice.”

Mary C. Curtis

Columnist at CQ Roll Call and Podcast Host, ‘Equal Time’

Mary C. Curtis is an award-winning journalist and educator based in Charlotte, N.C. and Washington, D.C. She is a columnist at CQ Roll Call, a news outlet reporting Capitol Hill legislative and political news, as well as political coverage of congressional elections. Her coverage specialty is the intersection of politics, culture and race, in addition to reporting at two decades of presidential elections. A 2006 Nieman Fellow, Curtis contributes to major national and regional media outlets. Her podcast, “Equal Time with Mary C. Curtis,” examines policy and politics through the lens of social justice.
