Guest Performance: Queer Voices with Marcus Maroney, Musiqa & Shelley Wong

Monday, April 21, 2025

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Marcus Karl Maroney’s newest world premiere is created in collaboration with award-winning poet Shelley Wong, whose work explores femininity, sexuality and identity, and foregrounds queer women of color in a broader artistic discussion of who matters in society. Wong’s “As She Appears” was long listed for the 2022 National Book Award for Poetry and won the 2023 Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Poetry.

Wong will be reading from her work at the concert, followed by a performance of Maroney’s newly composed song cycle based on new poetry commissioned for this project. A talkback session with the artists will follow the reading and performance.

This performance is in collaboration with Musiqa.

Performers:

Shelley Wong (reader)
Timothy Jones (baritone)
Maiko Sasaki (clarinet)
Ninki Chugh (violin)
Caio Diniz (cello)

This project is funded by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.
