Mario Kapusta, M.D.

Mario Kapusta, M.D. is an adjunct clinical faculty member in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. He will also be a small group facilitator for the Physicians, Patients, and Populations (PPP) course. Kapusta specializes in cardiovascular and venous diseases. With extensive experience in both medical and cosmetic vein procedures, he brings a wealth of expertise in minimally invasive treatments, including sclerotherapy, laser therapy, and radiofrequency ablation for vascular conditions.

Kapusta has a longstanding commitment to medical education and has been actively involved in training medical students, residents, and colleagues in the field of cardiovascular surgery and venous medicine. His clinical interests include the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of venous disorders, incorporating advanced ultrasound techniques to ensure targeted and effective patient care.

Before joining the College, he served as a staff surgeon at the Texas Vein and Wellness Institute, where he established a cosmetic treatment program focused on hand, spider and reticular veins. He previously founded and led multiple vascular-focused practices, including the Vein Center Houston, one of the first in the region to incorporate laser and radiofrequency vein closure techniques. Earlier in his career, he played a pivotal role in developing East Texas’ first heart surgery program at Mother Frances Hospital, where he performed more than 300 procedures annually.

Kapusta completed his cardiovascular surgery residency at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston and his general surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical School. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Argentina. He is board-certified in surgery, thoracic surgery, venous and lymphatic medicine and holds multiple vascular ultrasound certifications.

As an active member of professional organizations such as the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American College of Phlebology, Kapusta remains dedicated to advancing patient care and medical education. Fluent in English and a native Spanish speaker, he is committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care to diverse communities.
