This November, the University of Houston’s School of Theatre & Dance will invite audiences to experience a groundbreaking theatrical event with its latest production, “Safe at Home” by Gabriel Greene and Alex Levy. Supported by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, this innovative performance will be staged at Schroeder Park, the University’s baseball stadium, offering a dynamic environment for an exploration of contemporary social issues.

“Safe at Home” is a 90-minute immersive production that examines U.S. immigration policies, racial politics and the intersection of personal ethics with media influence. Set against the backdrop of Game 7 of the World Series, the play provides a voyeuristic look into the complexities of these topics while challenging societal perceptions.

“Site-specific immersive theater has long been a passion of mine, as it allows the audience to be both voyeur and participant,” said Jack Reuler, director of “Safe at Home.” “In many traditional plays, the audience remains stationary while the set and actors change between scenes. In ‘Safe at Home,’ the set and actors stay put while the audience moves, cycling through nine scenes in nine locations to see a whodunit thriller unfold. The play dives into U.S. immigration policy and our obsession with celebrity through the lens of baseball, all while asking the question, ‘Does the good of the many outweigh the good of the individual?’ Each scene ends on a cliffhanger, pulling the audience further into the story.”

Melissa Noble, managing director and coordinator of interdisciplinary initiatives for the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, expressed her excitement about the collaboration.

“The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts is thrilled to welcome Jack Reuler as a visiting artist and to support this unique production, both of which reflect our mission of providing innovative art and performance to the campus and the greater Houston community,” Noble said.

The performances will take place on November 7, 8, 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.

Join us for this exceptional event as we combine the thrill of live performance with a critical examination of the world we live in. “Safe at Home” promises to be a powerful experience that resonates long after the final curtain.
