The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics received a National Science Foundation grant to support a new initiative to train students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This program includes preparatory courses that teach real-world academic and professional skills, academic support for selected classes, and true research experiences in NSM STEM labs for incoming students through graduation.

The program provides three components:

• A Summer Bridge Program that includes jump-start courses in introductory math and science, advising, access to University resources and mentoring to facilitate FTIC (freshman) students’ transition to college and entry into an NSM major
• The Freshmen Interest Group (FIG), a two-semester cohort-based learning and community-building course that includes support activities for Getting Connected, Academic Growth, Advisement, Career Development and Mentoring
• The Undergraduate Research Guild Experience (URGE), a comprehensive research training experience that runs from the sophomore through senior year.
