With virtual parking permits, it is important that permit holders park their vehicles so that a properly displayed license plate is visible from the drive lane.

• The license plate must be displayed according to manufacturer specifications.
• A license plate placed on a dashboard or affixed to the front or back windshields is not considered to be displayed according to manufacturer specifications.
• If a vehicle does not have a front license plate, or the front license plate is affixed to the windshield or dashboard, then the rear license plate must be facing the drive lane, as shown in the first photo below.
• A drive lane is the driving path directly adjacent to where a vehicle enters a parking space.

As the photo below depicts, the green checkmarks show license plates that are facing the drive lane. 

Why Is This a Rule?

With virtual parking permits, there is no plastic hangtag displayed. The only way to authenticate that the vehicle is associated with a valid UH parking permit is to read the plates with the license plate readers that are attached to the enforcement vehicles. If the license plate is not displayed properly, then the license plate reader may not be able to read it.

Also, it is important to remember that a permit can only be used to park one vehicle on campus at a time. This is why only one vehicle can be associated with the permit. The vehicle associated with the permit is what is referred to as the "active vehicle."
