Advancing Sustainability in Hydrogen Supply Chains (HSC): Digital Transformation in Hydrogen Transportation and Logistics in the State of Texas
The adoption of hydrogen as an energy carrier has gained prominence. This study addresses the knowledge gap in the Texas energy landscape by focusing on the transportation, storage, and distribution-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within hydrogen supply chains (HSC). Unique to this research is the integration of supply chain management and transport geography, examining the spatial connections among HSC activities and their environmental consequences. The project introduces "TransHSC", an AI-enabled digital twin platform, with the aim to track GHG emissions, uncover spatial interdependencies among the HSC entities, and propose strategies for emission reduction. The system's three core modules include data integration and forecasting, delivery operation and route optimization, and digital twins. By providing short-term and medium-term forecasts, optimizing delivery operations, and creating a virtual replica of the HSC logistics system, the TransHSC platform anticipates reducing at least 15% of Scope 3 emissions through data-driven route optimization. The outcomes aim to offer a comprehensive understanding of the HSC activities' environmental impact, motivate emissions reduction, and facilitate the adoption of cleaner technologies in Texas. The collaboration with the Energy Transition Institute (ETI) ensures effective knowledge transfer and potential technology dissemination.
