At the University of Houston College of Education, we’re working to improve educational and health outcomes for all people and communities through effective teaching, innovative research and strong partnerships.     Curriculum & Instruction

    Our award-winning teacher-preparation program gives students invaluable classroom experience with support from experienced mentors. At the graduate level, our degrees deepen students’ research skills and content knowledge for career advancement. Together, we're making an impact in schools across the region.

    Our graduate programs prepare aspiring principals, superintendents, special education professionals, higher education administrators and other scholars committed to transformative leadership. We also offer undergraduate minors in special populations and Asian-American studies.

    With a focus on improving wellness and quality of life, we offer undergraduate degrees in health and human development and family sciences. We also offer graduate degrees in counseling, counseling psychology, school psychology, and measurement, quantitative methods and learning sciences.

    Growing up, Alex Hernandez (left) found inspiration in his elementary school teacher, Justin Burris. Years later as a struggling UH student, Hernandez connected with Burris, now a professor, to help him fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher himself.

    “As a first-generation American, I have had to navigate things without the help of others who have already gone through the education system,” said Maria Guadalupe Pizano, who sought support to rise to the top of the fall 2024 graduating class.

    “The most important thing is to not be afraid to ask for help,” advises Laura Lee, a member of the College’s Student Success Team. “Meet with your professor during office hours and make friends in class so you can have study buddies.”

    Researchers Find Texas Teacher Retention is Declining

    The UH Education Research Center reports that strong teacher preparation with certification could prevent the downward trend. “We have seen trends that those who are uncertified leave the classroom at higher rates,” said research scientist Toni Templeton.

    Faculty, Students and Alumni to Share Research at APA Conference

    Scholars from the College will present their research findings on autism, stress and trauma, ADHD, and other important topics related to mental health and learning at the 2024 American Psychological Association Convention.

Carrie Cutler, a clinical associate professor of mathematics education won the 2024 Teacher Educator of the Year Award from Texas Association for the Education of Young Children.

Student Success Coach Laura Lee earned a 2024 UH President’s Excellence Award in the administrative professional category.

Seven faculty members in the College earned promotions in fall 2024: Jeanette Alarcón (CUIN), Toya Conston (PHLS), Duncan Klussmann (ELPS), Blake Allan (PHLS), Conra Gist (CUIN), Dave Louis (ELPS) and Jie Zhang (CUIN).

Cindy Romero, program manager in the Department of Psychological, Health, & Learning Sciences, was elected to the UH Staff Council as an at-large representative.
