About Us
Background
In 2015, Dr. Daniel Price started the Initiative after his close work with the community and after noticing community members' lack of trust in the health care system. The UH Community Health Workers Initiative has taken the lead in building community capacity through trust and advocacy as a network of community health workers, undergraduates, faculty, and staff.
Initiative Overview:
- The Training Center within the Community Health Workers Initiative (CHWI) is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to provide the 160-hour certification course required to be certified as CHW in the State of Texas.
- The University of Houston CHW Training Center is also approved to provide continuing education hours toward the renewal for CHW and CHW Instructors. Spanish continuing education hours are also available.
- By Summer 2022, the CHW Training Center will have over 405 certified new CHWs since beginning in 2018.

En 2015, el Dr. Daniel Price comenzó la Iniciativa después de su trabajo cercano con la comunidad y después de notar la falta de confianza de los miembros de la comunidad en el sistema de atención médica. Fall 2024 Graduation
We are thrilled to announce that this past fall, we celebrated the graduation of 73 new CHW students. We acknowledge their hard work and dedication, and we wish them success in their new careers. Our graduates have proven themselves in our three our on-site locations: CFC, Oxford Place, Sunnyside, and our online platform! We also would like to thank four commencement speaker Dr. Luis D. Medina. Dr Medina is a licensed clinical psychologist and cultural neuropsychologist. He received his B.A. in psychology from Yale University and Ph.D. in clinical psychology/neuropsychology from the San Diego State University/University of California San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Medina completed his clinical internship at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center (geropsychology track) followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in adult clinical neuropsychology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His research examines the cultural neuroscience of cognitive aging, particularly in the context of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), as well as the clinical assessment and diagnosis of ADRD in historically underrepresented populations.

We are thrilled to announce that this past fall, we celebrated the graduation of 90 exceptional students. It is with great pride that we acknowledge their hard work and dedication, and we wish them success in their future endeavors. Our graduates have proven themselves in both our on-site location, CFC, and our online platform.We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed commencement speaker, María L. De León, MD. Dr. De León is a fellowship trained movement disorder specialist as well as an avid research advocate. Over the last two decades, she has spent most of it her time championing women’s issues and setting ground for understanding gender differences in neurological diseases, particularly that of Parkinson's. Maria has been instrumental in the development of “Women and PD initiative” and she is the award-winning author of “Parkinson’s Diva.” Part of her advocacy work is also attempting to decrease the disparity in healthcare treatment among minorities work as a Parkinson’s Research Advocates, collaborating with the MRCT Center to establish a guide on “diversity for clinical trials” for NIH. She was part of the PD Foundation PDGENEration Hispanic Advisory Board and has worked with MJFox public policy forum for more than a decade winning the Public Policy Award in 2021. Her inspiring words and valuable insights left a lasting impact on our graduates, and we were honored to have had her as our speaker.
We would also like to take a moment to express our gratitude to all the family and friends who have supported our graduates throughout their educational journey. Your unwavering encouragement, love, and guidance have played an integral role in their success. We recognize and appreciate the sacrifices you have made to help them achieve their goals.Once again, congratulations to our graduating students, and thank you to everyone who has contributed to their success. In Spring 2023 we graduated 63 new Community Health Worker students from our on-site location, CFC, and our online platform. We also would like to thank our commencement speaker, Denise A Hernandez, Ph.D. MPH, CHWI who is the Executive Director of the DFW Community Health Worker Initiative and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing and Health Information.
