UHCOP Students Join Satellite Program Partner DHR to Provide Wellness Screenings, Education at Jan. 20 Edinburg Event
UH College of Pharmacy students teamed with Rio Grande Valley Pharm.D. Satellite Program partner Doctors Hospital at Rennaisance to provide free wellness screenings and health education to the public at the 12th Annual DHR Health Community Health Fair Jan. 20 in Edinburg.
A crew of 19 Pharm.D. students — mostly members of the college’s Mexican-American Pharmacy Student Association — participated in the event, which drew more than 1,000 attendees. UHCOP students provided a total of 200 blood pressure and blood glucose readings and health awareness/education on such topics as hypertension and low-impact exercises for those with restricted mobility.
The event marked the first official collaboration in community health outreach between the organizations since their formal signing ceremony last summer to mark the launch of the RGV Satellite Program.
Former DHR pharmacy manager Ronnie Ozuna, Pharm.D., BCPS, who joined the college in November as the inaugural RGV Pharm.D. Satellite Program dean, also gave UHCOP students a tour of the DHR facilities and central pharmacy and spoke about the abundant opportunities for expanding pharmacist-delivered patient care services and research in the region.
