UHCOP's Hussain Named Fellow of American Society of Nephrology
March 15 — Tahir Hussain, Ph.D., FAHA, Joseph P. and Shirley Shipman Buckley Endowed Professor, associate dean for Research and Graduate Programs, and director of the Heart & Kidney Institute, has been named as a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology.
The FASN designation recognizes the dedicated member’s proven professional contributions and their diverse set of skills and comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of nephrology. Eligibility is based on a combination of nephrology-centered factors, including ASN service, grant support/funding, publications, and teaching.
Hussain’s research focus is on the mechanisms and roles of the angiotensin Ang II receptors in hypertension, metabolic dysfunction and kidney function and disease.
He has authored or coauthored nearly 100 journal articles and reviews in such publications as Hypertension, the American Journal of Physiology, Kidney International and Journal of Biological Chemistry; two book chapters; and more than 60 published and/or presented abstracts. He also serves as associate editor and editorial board member of the peer-reviewed journal Clinical and Experimental Hypertension, and reviewer for 18 other journals.
During his career, Hussain has received more than $6 million as principal investigator on National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants, as well as serving an additional $3.5 million as co-investigator or co-principal investigator on NIH grants.
In addition to also being a designated as a Fellow of the American Heart Association in 2014, Hussain received the University of Houston's Research Excellence and Scholarship Award in 2010, a three-time recipient of the UHCOP Rho Chi Society Beta Omicron Chapter's Teaching Excellence Award, and service awards from UHCOP and the Association of Scientists of Indian Origin in America.
He has served as graduate advisor/co-advisor for more than a dozen Ph.D. students, as well as research project advisor for 15 high school, undergraduate and Pharm.D. students.
