About the TCLD

Since 2006, the Texas Center for Learning Disorders (TCLD) has served as a multidisciplinary hub for advancing research on Learning and other Neurodevelopmental Disorders. In 2023, the Texas Center for Learning Disorders was established as an endowed departmental center, thanks to a $10 million dollar gift. The center supports the research and dissemination efforts of affiliated faculty and provides clinical services to families in the Houston area.
Early federally and state-funded work at TCLD focused on multidisciplinary studies of inadequate instructional response, a defining characteristic of learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. This work demonstrated that intensive, explicit instruction improves outcomes for struggling readers in elementary and secondary settings. Additional work addressed the neurobiological differences introduced by improved classroom instruction, including neuroimaging and genetic studies. This program of research resulted in significant changes in federal, state, and local policies and practices that now emphasize the importance of early intervention frameworks to prevent learning disabilities.
Today, we are pioneering studies with children who face persistent learning challenges across multiple neurodevelopmental disorders. By integrating cognitive science, neuroimaging, and genetics, we are refining classification methods, enhancing intervention strategies, and uncovering how language, attention, and executive functions impact learning and development. We constantly add new members and expand our focus to additional disorders of learning and development. We have forged new partnerships to leverage the assets and expertise of the Greater Houston Area. TCLD-affiliated researchers, along with partners at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the University of Texas-Dallas recently received an $11.8M award from the National Institutes of Health to establish a clinical research center focused on early language development. This work, along with the individual efforts of TCLD-affiliated researchers and its many partners and participants, will help ensure that the research at TCLD will continue to improve the lives of families with at-risk learners.
