Hilton College has its first Active Learning Classroom (ALC), thanks to Assistant Professor Rachel Han (left) and Lecturer and Ph.D. candidate Elizabeth Whalen (right), who won a Teaching Innovation Program grant from the University of Houston last October. Their proposal, titled “Interactive and Student-Centered Learning Through the Active Learning Classroom,” earned the College a $27,850 grant to convert the yellow computer lab into a truly interactive classroom.

The ALC, completed at the start of this spring semester, encourages interaction beyond the traditional lecture. With eight computer workstations and the best audiovisual equipment, it gives up to 32 students and the instructor opportunities to collaborate through group and web-based assignments, simulations, videos and open discussion. To bring the ALC to fruition, the instructors worked with IT Manager Gautam Taneja (center). Facilities Director Michael Scott provided guidance, and AV Technician Andrew Purcell helped with installation.

“They provided the plan, and we executed it. And it was awesome that we stayed under budget by not having to hire any outside sources,” Gautam said.

Dr. Han says she is happy about this opportunity that allows a true and active exchange of knowledge during class. “When students learn from each other through interaction, they can really own the classroom,” she said. Four classes are currently held in the ALC.
