BIG Wine for a BIG Evening! Guests planning to attend the 2012 Hospitality Industry Hall of Honor induction ceremony and dinner are in for a special treat: an assortment of fine Villa Banfi wines. The wines will be featured in honor of Banfi’s Mariani Family, who—along with extended-stay hotel pioneer Jack DeBoer—will be inducted into the Hospitality Hall of Honor on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Hilton University of Houston. Banfi has generously donated the wines for the dinner, including their classic Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino (pictured), San Angelo Pinot Grigio, BelnerO proprietary red blend and Rosa Regale sparkling red. Food & beverage manager Lee Kemmerling (right), along with food & beverage coordinators Jose Kong (left) and Phuc Nguyen (center), are part of the Hall of Honor student leadership team charged with pairing the wines with the perfect appetizers, entrée and dessert. Faculty Class of 2012 It’s no secret that the Hilton College faculty are experienced and talented, but did you know they are also adept at physical labor? As part of their annual retreat to kick off the new fall semester, our faculty rolled up their sleeves and got sweaty, helping students move into the Cougar Village residence hall. Spearheaded by Dr. Karl Titz, the Hilton College faculty joined a group of 300 volunteer “Cougar Movers,” who unloaded boxes, directed traffic and helped the incoming freshmen get situated in their new homes on campus. Jeff Fuller, UH director of Student Recruitment, said he expects 2012 enrollment to exceed 40,000 students—the University’s largest to date. Of those, 1,092 are Hilton College undergraduates, and 108 are our grad students. After the big move, the faculty took a breather in the air-conditioned lobby of the Hilton University of Houston and posed for a quick group photo. Introducing the Fab Five It’s show time! The fall semester is under way, and with it, five new faculty members have made their debuts at Hilton College. The “Fab Five” are (from left to right) Lecturer Anthony Chevalier, Lecturer Kristi Baker, Assistant Professor Cristian Morosan, Assistant Professor Priyanko Guchait and Lecturer Elizabeth Whalen. Chevalier, owner of A Taste of Catering and a former American Airlines crew chief who recently retired after 29 years of service, is teaching Food Service Production and Operations. Baker, who received her MS in Hospitality Management from Hilton College in May 2012, is the new instructor for Barron’s Restaurant. She and her students will be introducing a new bistro-inspired menu when Barron’s reopens for the semester on Sept. 18. Dr. Morosan, who received his MSc and PhD in Foodservice and Lodging Management from Iowa State, is teaching Hospitality Technology, and Hospitality Management Strategies. Dr. Guchait, who received his MS in Hospitality Management from the University of Missouri, a second MS in Human Resources and Employment Relations, and a PhD in Hospitality Management from Penn State, is teaching Human Resource Management, and Leadership in the Hospitality Industry. And finally, Whalen, who also graduated from Hilton College with her MS in Hospitality Management in May, is teaching Room and Housekeeping Management, Advanced Hospitality Operations, and Advanced Lodging Management.
