Amber (Amy) Amspoker, Ph.D.

Amber (Amy) Amspoker, Ph.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston, and a member of the Humana Integrated Health System Sciences Institute. A biostatistician, social psychologist and quantitative methodologist, she provides statistical leadership for interdisciplinary research teams conducting clinical and health services research. In this role, she partners with faculty investigators to develop competitive grant proposals, design rigorous studies and apply advanced analytic methods to evaluate programs aimed at improving health care access, quality and patient-centered outcomes.

Her work focuses on the statistical design and evaluation of health services interventions. As a team scientist, she collaborates with clinicians, health services researchers and implementation scientists to strengthen the methodological rigor of interdisciplinary research. Her collaborations span telehealth and digital health innovation, chronic disease management and mental health services, particularly for Veterans and other populations who experience barriers to care. Across more than 20 research teams, her work has contributed to dozens of funded studies and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications examining strategies to improve health care delivery and patient outcomes.

Previously, Amspoker served as a faculty member in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, where she conducted health services research in collaboration with investigators at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) and the Houston Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety (IQuESt). During this time, she held several leadership roles in research methodology and evaluation within the Veterans Health Administration, including directing the Implementation, Design and Analysis Support (MIDAS) team within the South Central Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center and serving as Associate Director of Evaluation for the Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education. She continues to collaborate with investigators at the MEDVAMC and leads quantitative evaluation of research designed to improve access to mental health care and support patient-centered health care delivery, including telehealth platforms and artificial intelligence–enabled tools.

Amspoker received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Texas A&M University. She earned her Master of Science in social psychology from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. in social psychology with a minor in quantitative methodology from the University of Houston. She has received several awards recognizing her contributions to research and methods education, including Outstanding Faculty Educator, Women of Excellence Award, and the Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Award for Educational Research.
