How to Apply for Financial Aid
Financial Aid Eligibility
Eligibility for financial aid is determined by evaluating a medical student’s ability to contribute to their medical education. All financial information is collected via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be completed each year to apply for federal, state or university financial aid and scholarships. The FAFSA may be completed as early as October 1 to begin the financial aid process for the next academic year. The University of Houston’s priority deadline is January 15.
What You Need to Complete the FAFSA
Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID
- First-time and renewal applicants need an FSA ID username and password to securely access financial aid information and electronically sign FSA documents.
Federal School Code
- UH/UH CoM School Code: 003652
Social Security Number/Alien Registration Number
- Students need their SSN, spouse’s SSN, and, if applicable, parents’ SSN* to complete the FAFSA.
Tax Information
- “For the fall 2024 class, students will complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA with tax data from 2022. Students may be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer information directly to the FAFSA.
- Student Financial Information
- Students will submit information about their (including spouse) savings, investments, and assets.
*Parental Data
- If you are only applying for the Federal Direct Loan Unsubsidized Loans and the Federal Direct PLUS Loan, parental information is not required or used in determination of eligibility. Students applying for Federal Loans to Disadvantaged Students (LDS) are required to provide parental information on the FAFSA.

Notification from UH
Students will receive Financial Aid Notice via email in April or May. Aid offers can be accepted or declined through their myUH self-service account. If students intend to borrow federal loan funding, they must first complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN for Graduate/Professional Students) and entrance counseling through the Federal Student Aid Website.
- The MPN is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loans.
- These forms must each be completed once during medical school. Once on file, entrance counseling has no expiration date and your MPN is valid for ten years if you are borrowing direct federal loans.
- If borrowing through the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan program has been exhausted and students wish to pursue funding through the Federal Direct PLUS Loan program, they must complete a second MPN by choosing “PLUS MPN for Graduate/Professional Students” and entrance counseling through FSA.
Establish a Refund Preference with UH
- If you have financial aid remaining after your tuition and fees have been paid, you will receive a refund. After registration, students will receive an information packet from BankMobile Disbursements, a technology solution, powered by BMTX, Inc. with instructions to establish a refund preference.
