Reuter Pipe Organ
The A. D. Bruce Religion Center is home to two notable electro-pneumatic pipe organs built by the Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence, Kansas.
The University Chapel organ, built in 1965 and dedicated in 1966, is a large three-manual (33 rank/40 stop) instrument located in the rear gallery of the larger University Chapel. A small self-contained two-manual (4 rank/20 stop) organ, installed in 1967, is located on the second-floor Meditation Chapel.
Both of these instruments were direct results of the efforts of the late Dr. Robert J. Jones, long-time University of Houston Professor of Music and Organ Instructor. The University Chapel organ is almost an exact duplicate of a Reuter organ located in the studios of the University Of Michigan School Of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jones, having received his Doctorate in Organ from the University of Michigan, studied with well-known American organist and University of Michigan Organ Professor Marilyn Mason. Mason served as a consultant for the Chapel organ while Jones was the driving force that made it a reality.
The aesthetic beauty of the large University Chapel with the “exposed” Reuter pipe organ is only surpassed by the incredible beauty of its natural surroundings. In addition, from a music perspective, the natural acoustics afforded by the room itself create a wonderful listening experience for chapel congregants and visitors.
The Meditation Chapel organ, purchased shortly after the Chapel organ was to be installed, was provided by a special donor upon learning that the room was in need of an instrument.
Both instruments continue to provide a multitude of musical opportunities for denominational services at the center as well as for weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, dedications, memorials, funerals, organ lessons, and recitals.”
